A former convict wanted in Georgia for allegedly hitting his wife with a bottle and kidnapping her was found Thursday more than 1,000 miles away — hiding in a relative’s home in Providence.
The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department had been searching for Glen Johnson, 51, since July 3, when he ran into the woods by his house in Snellville, Ga., as the police responded to his wife’s 911 call.
Johnson’s wife, who was not named by the police, said Johnson had attacked her with a bottle two days earlier and then kidnapped her when he found out she called her church for help, according to a report from the U.S. Marshals Service. She accused Johnson of forcing her into his vehicle and driving her around for two days, until coming back to their house in Snellville.
The Sheriff’s Department had warrants charging Johnson with kidnapping and assault, but they couldn’t find him. Until Tuesday, when they gave the U.S. Marshals Service in Rhode Island a tip that Johnson was with relatives in Providence, said Marshal Steven G. O’Donnell.
Johnson has spent enough time in Rhode Island to have built a 30-year criminal record here, with charges including assault, break-ins, robbery and drugs, according to court records. Within two days, the marshals and state police in the violent-fugitive task force had tracked down Johnson to a relative’s first-floor apartment at 79 Sorrento St., which O’Donnell called “impressive work.”
Johnson was arraigned Friday at District Court, Providence, as a fugitive from justice. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on Monday.
