Teen shot in chest outside SGHS / Britt Elementary

A 16-year-old was shot in the chest on Skyland Drive, in between South Gwinnett High School and W.C. Britt Elementary in Snellville Ga.  South Gwinnett's football team was playing a scrimmage game with Mill Creek High School. The shooting occurred around 11 p.m.

Neither the shooter or the victim are students at either of the schools. The name of the victim has not been announced, but it's known that the victim has been taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment. I have read that the victim's injuries are "not life threatening," but being shot in the chest cannot be good. The Snellville Police Department is handling this case, with assistance from Gwinnett County Public Schools' Police.

To those unfamiliar with the area on Skyland Drive - The parking lot most used by South Gwinnett, and especially for football games - is the parking lot right next to W.C. Britt Elementary. People park there and walk across Skyland Drive to the football field. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, the shooting happened in front of Snellville's Britt Elementary.

This shooting happened at night, and no elementary students were around, unless they were attending the scrimmage game. Members of the high school band were kept inside the school on lock-down. It sounds to me like South Gwinnett followed proper safety procedures for students and staff. Most people at the game were unaware anything out of the ordinary was happening.

• Police have "person of interest" in mind, but no arrests as of 2:09 am Aug 14, 2010.
